Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated the Malaysian government’s unwavering commitment to advancing the electric vehicle (EV) industry and fostering the adoption of green technology. He emphasized that this commitment aligns seamlessly with the objectives outlined in Budget 2024, which aims to accelerate the widespread acceptance of EVs and encourage the use of green technology across various sectors.
Anwar pointed out that EVs hold significant promise in combating climate change, as the automotive industry is responsible for approximately one-fifth of global emissions. He highlighted the importance of transitioning to EVs, not only for cost savings on fuel and gas but also for significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in support of sustainability efforts.
Addressing a gathering during the launch of the Weststar Maxus MIFA 9 Electric Vehicle, Anwar urged collaboration among the government, industry players, and the public to create a cleaner and more sustainable Malaysia for future generations.
The Prime Minister underscored the government’s strong commitment to sustainable mobility and green technology, evident in its robust policies. He highlighted several initiatives designed to promote EV adoption and sustainable transportation in the country.
One such initiative involves extending import duty exemptions for locally assembled EV components until December 2027. The government has also granted full excise tax and sales tax exemptions for completely knocked-down (CKD) EVs and extended completely built-up (CBU) duty exemptions until December 2025.
In addition to these incentives, the government offers tax deductions of up to RM300,000 for companies leasing non-commercial electric vehicles and has waived road taxes for EVs until December 31, 2025. These measures are aimed at encouraging both businesses and individuals to transition to electric vehicles.
Anwar further revealed the government’s commitment to establishing 10,000 EV charging stations throughout Malaysia by 2025. Currently, there are 1,246 operational public charging stations, marking the initial phase of a comprehensive charging infrastructure that will facilitate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
During the event, Anwar commended Weststar Maxus for its role in promoting EVs and green technology. He acknowledged the private sector’s pivotal role in advancing common goals, including environmental sustainability and the well-being of the population.
The launch of the Weststar Maxus MIFA 9 Electric Vehicle serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to global climate agendas and, more importantly, to the health and safety of its citizens. Anwar highlighted the impressive journey of Weststar Maxus since its establishment in 2010, as it has emerged as a significant contributor to Malaysia’s automotive sector and the national economy.
