Micron Technology Strengthens Malaysia’s Semiconductor Ecosystem with Investment in Talent Development and STEM Education
In alignment with Malaysia’s National Semiconductor Strategy, US-based Micron Technology Inc is ramping up its contributions as a leading semiconductor assembly and testing provider in Malaysia. With a focus on advanced packaging and high-tech semiconductor processes, Micron is not only boosting the local economy but is also helping develop a skilled Malaysian workforce that will strengthen the country’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Moorthy Murugaiah, Micron’s senior director of global human resources operations, highlighted the company’s commitment to nurturing local talent, particularly in advanced semiconductor back-end processes. “Since we started operations in Penang, our contribution has been clear not just in terms of products, but in fostering a skilled workforce capable of managing advanced semiconductor technologies,” he explained.
Upskilling and Talent Development for the Future
Micron’s investment in Malaysia goes beyond production. The company is investing heavily in upskilling Malaysian employees to manage complex, high-precision semiconductor operations. With nearly 80 to 85% of new hires being recent graduates, Micron offers structured development programs to prepare fresh talent for critical roles within the company.
For existing employees, Micron partners with local and government agencies to provide upskilling programs that keep the workforce competitive in the rapidly evolving semiconductor sector. This dual approach of developing both new and existing talent aims to build a robust pipeline of skilled workers in Malaysia.
Expanding Malaysia’s Role in the Semiconductor Industry
Micron’s continued presence and investment in Malaysia are expected to have a long-term impact, creating high-value jobs and fostering innovation. According to Moorthy, Micron’s strategy includes increasing the complexity of products manufactured in Malaysia, further positioning the country as a leader in high-tech manufacturing.
“Talent mobility is global, and it’s important for Micron to attract, retain, and develop local talent,” he added. “This commitment not only strengthens Malaysia’s position in the semiconductor supply chain but also bolsters the local ecosystem.”
Boosting STEM Education from the Ground Up
To address the growing demand for technical talent, Micron has been working with the Penang Science Cluster to enhance STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. Since 2019, this collaboration has provided Malaysian students with hands-on exposure to robotics, electronics, and engineering through maker labs in local schools, helping to build a foundation of practical skills for future technical careers.
Micron’s Step Up 2.0 program targets Form 4 students in 20 schools, offering IT coursework in partnership with Inti College and KDU University College. The program aims to give students a competitive edge in pursuing STEM careers by providing certifications in IT and monitoring the impact of the intervention on career choices.
Encouraging STEM in Underrepresented Communities
Micron’s partnership with the University of Malaya’s STEM Centre has led to the creation of the STEM Ambassador Programme, where university students promote STEM education in underrepresented communities, including rural areas and among female students. These ambassadors work to inspire young people to consider STEM careers, ensuring a diverse pipeline of future talent.
