Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has initiated a tender process to appoint a consultant responsible for conducting a comprehensive study on the Penang light rail transit (LRT) project. This study is expected to provide in-depth insights and crucial details about the proposed Penang LRT project.
Zairil Khir Johari, the State Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman, shared this information during the Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting. He stated that the study’s findings are anticipated to be ready for review by early next year. This study will be instrumental in shedding light on various aspects of the Penang LRT project, including its scope, feasibility, and potential challenges.
One of the key factors affecting the Penang LRT project’s progress is the decision-making process within the Transport Ministry. The implementation methods and technical details, such as the alignments and locations of the LRT stations, need to be finalized by the Transport Ministry. Consequently, details regarding the project’s costs, implementation strategies, and commencement date are contingent on the Transport Ministry’s decisions.
Despite these considerations, Zairil Khir reiterated the Penang state government’s commitment to enhancing public transportation through the implementation of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP). He highlighted the recent announcement by the federal government regarding a substantial RM10 billion allocation for the Penang LRT project extending to Seberang Perai. This allocation marks a significant step toward improving the quality of life for Penang residents by enhancing public transport coverage, services, and neighborhood connectivity. Additionally, it is expected to serve as an economic catalyst for the state.
