Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Bintang — long celebrated as Malaysia’s premier shopping and entertainment hub — is about to sparkle even brighter.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has unveiled a bold plan to transform the district into Malaysia’s version of Tokyo’s Ginza and Singapore’s Orchard Road, positioning it as a vibrant, walkable, and globally recognisable boulevard ahead of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
1. “I Lite U”: A New Chapter for Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur
Speaking at the soft launch of the “I Lite U” project at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Nga described the initiative as a milestone in urban beautification and economic revitalisation.
The collaboration between the Housing and Local Government Ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) aims to make the city’s Golden Triangle “even more vibrant, colourful and alive than ever before.”
“My mission is to make Kuala Lumpur’s golden triangle off Bukit Bintang no less than Ginza Street in Tokyo or Orchard Road in Singapore,” Nga said, as reported by Free Malaysia Today.
The project will include four key components — artistic street lighting, a new Visit Malaysia 2026 sculpture, curated night-time experiences, and upgraded public spaces.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to officiate the grand launch on January 3, which will feature a colourful street parade and artistic showcases.

The “I Lite U” project represents more than decorative improvements — it’s a strategic move to elevate Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur into a true global lifestyle district.
Like Ginza in Tokyo and Orchard Road in Singapore, Bukit Bintang’s evolution is tied to the success of Malaysia’s tourism, retail, and property sectors.
“Tourists will enjoy a more lively and safe atmosphere, entrepreneurs will benefit from a planned night-time economy, and residents will witness the beauty of a city that reflects the dignity and identity of Malaysia,” said Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
The initiative seeks to make Bukit Bintang not just a shopping destination — but a cultural and experiential hub that celebrates Malaysian creativity, architecture, and hospitality.
3. Lighting, Art, and Nightlife: Key Features of the “I Lite U” Project
Under the plan, the streets of Bukit Bintang will be reimagined through interactive lighting designs, inspired by Malaysia’s diverse cultural motifs and heritage patterns.
The artistic lighting will span key roads including Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Sultan Ismail, and Jalan Gading, connecting major landmarks such as Pavilion KL, Lot 10, Fahrenheit88, Starhill Gallery, and the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX).
At the centrepiece of the project will be a Visit Malaysia 2026 sculpture, symbolising Malaysia’s unity and progress, while acting as a photogenic landmark for both locals and tourists.
The initiative will also introduce improved pedestrian pathways, public safety measures, and 24-hour CCTV monitoring, ensuring a safe, walkable, and family-friendly environment.
4. Boosting the Night-Time Economy
Beyond tourism, the “I Lite U” project aims to stimulate Kuala Lumpur’s night-time economy — a key growth sector globally.
By extending activity beyond regular shopping hours, the plan will encourage late-night dining, performances, and outdoor events, much like Ginza’s light festivals or Singapore’s Night at Orchard.
The initiative also complements Malaysia’s broader tourism push. Tourism Malaysia has set a target of 45 million international visitors during the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, with Bukit Bintang expected to serve as one of the primary showcases of the nation’s modern identity.
5. Managing Growth and Connectivity
To ensure smooth execution, DBKL and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will coordinate road closures and crowd management during major events.
Nga confirmed that Bukit Bintang Road will be temporarily closed for the launch parade in January, advising visitors to use public transport, particularly the MRT and Monorail lines that directly serve the district.
The area’s accessibility — with direct links via Bukit Bintang MRT, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, and KLCC’s covered pedestrian walkway — makes it an ideal location for such large-scale urban showcases.

Urban transformation projects like “I Lite U” are expected to generate positive spillovers for Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur’s property values.
Retail and hospitality assets in the area — from Pavilion Residences and Fahrenheit Suites to The Exchange TRX and 8 Conlay — are likely to benefit from the enhanced public realm, pedestrian connectivity, and branding as a world-class shopping boulevard.
Commercial investors have long recognised Bukit Bintang as one of the most valuable real estate corridors in Malaysia, where prime retail rents average RM30–RM45 psf and luxury residences exceed RM2,500 psf.
With improved urban aesthetics and stronger tourism flows, property analysts expect continued demand from both international investors and local buyers seeking trophy assets in KL’s Golden Triangle.
