Kuching is set to celebrate a significant milestone in its geographic and cultural identity with the launch of the Kilometer Zero (KM0) marker at the 50th Anniversary Dinner of the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) Sarawak Branch. This event, which is a landmark in the surveying community of Sarawak, will take place this Thursday and promises to be a grand occasion.
The Significance of KM0
The concept of KM0 is rooted deeply in history, drawing inspiration from the Roman Empire’s Milliarium Aureum, also known as the Golden Milestone, from which all distances in the Empire were measured. Similarly, Kuching’s KM0 will serve as the definitive point from which all distances in the cityโand potentially across Sarawakโare gauged.
KM0 markers are more than just practical tools for distance measurement; they symbolize the heart of a city or nation. Placing such a marker in Kuching not only enhances its historical landscape but also anchors the city as a central hub from which all measurements start.
A Celebratory Launch Event
The unveiling of KM0 will be the centerpiece of RISM Sarawak’s 50th Anniversary Dinner, which will be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The event will also be attended by deputy premiers, federal and state ministers, and other dignitaries, making it a significant gathering of leaders who are pivotal in shaping the future of Sarawak.
RISM Sarawakโs Ongoing Commitment
In conjunction with the anniversary dinner, RISM Sarawak will also host the annual Surveyorsโ Congress on May 7 and 8. Themed โSurveyors Tomorrow: Pioneering the Next Eraโ, the congress will take place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). This gathering will feature sessions dedicated to the three main sections of surveying: Geomatic and Land Surveying (GLS), Property Surveying (PS), and Quantity Surveying (QS).
The congress aims to provide a platform for surveying professionals to discuss and share innovative ideas and practices in the field. Among the highlights will be a presentation by Dato Sri Fong Joo Chung, focusing on โThe Importance of Survey of Land under the Sarawak Land Codeโ, which promises to offer valuable insights into land management and surveying practices within Sarawak.
Looking Forward
The launch of the KM0 marker and the concurrent Surveyors’ Congress underscore RISM Sarawak’s dedication to promoting and upholding the standards of the surveying profession. These events not only celebrate past achievements but also pave the way for future innovations in the surveying and built environment sectors.
As Kuching installs its KM0 marker, the city steps forward as a central point of reference in Malaysiaโs geographical network, proudly marking its place on the map both literally and metaphorically.
