In a pivotal move towards sustainable transportation, PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) and the Malaysian Highway Authority (Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia or LLM) have joined forces under the guidance of the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) to streamline the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along the PLUS highway. This initiative marks a significant stride in Malaysia’s commitment to fostering an eco-friendly automotive landscape.
As part of the collaboration, strategic locations within rest and recreation (R&R) areas and highway lay-bys will be pinpointed to set up the charging stations, promising EV drivers more accessibility and convenience. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring that the infrastructure for EVs keeps pace with the growing demand for cleaner transportation options.
Further enhancing the initiative, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is undertaking an in-depth analysis of power supply sourcing methods to advocate for the use of renewable energy (RE) in EV charging. This approach not only aligns with Malaysia’s energy transition goals but also encourages the adoption of EVs by making charging more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
Addressing the logistics sector’s concerns, particularly highlighted by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd regarding the safety of EV charging, the National EV Steering Committee (NEVSC) has committed to developing best practice guidelines within six months. These guidelines aim to ensure safe and efficient EV charging practices within the logistics and transportation industry.
The NEVSC meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, also delved into streamlining procedures and licensing for EV charging stations to alleviate operational hurdles faced by service providers. Fadillah emphasized the government’s role in coordinating and facilitating regulations to nurture the EV ecosystem comprehensively, prioritizing safety and efficiency.
This concerted effort by the Malaysian government and key stakeholders signifies a major leap towards establishing a robust EV infrastructure, setting the stage for a greener, more sustainable future in transportation.
