Malaysia Announces Expanded Rooftop Solar Quotas and Incentives
In a push towards renewable energy, the Malaysian government has introduced additional quotas under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, alongside extended rebates for rooftop solar installations.
Key Highlights of the NEM Expansion
Quota Increases
- NEM Rakyat: Increased by 150 megawatts (MW) to a total of 600MW.
- NEM Nova: Increased by 300MW to a total of 1,700MW.
Eligibility Extensions
- Agriculture Category: Electricity users in the agriculture sector can now participate in the NEM programme.
- Upgrading Solar Systems: Existing rooftop solar users can now upgrade capacity and switch to the NEM programme.
Deadlines
- Applications for the NEM quota are open until June 30, 2025, or until quotas are fully allocated, whichever comes first.
Solar Rebates for Domestic Users
The Solar Incentive Scheme for the People (SolaRIS), which offers a rebate of up to RM4,000 for domestic users installing solar systems, has been extended until April 30, 2025, subject to eligibility.
Impact on Malaysia’s Renewable Energy Goals
The government’s commitment aligns with its National Energy Transition aspirations, targeting a 70% renewable energy capacity mix by 2050. The expanded NEM quotas and extended incentives aim to:
- Promote solar adoption among households, businesses, and agricultural sectors.
- Encourage the expansion and upgrading of existing rooftop solar systems.
- Boost Malaysia’s capacity to harness clean and sustainable energy sources.
Looking Ahead
These enhancements will take effect from Jan 1, 2025, signaling the government’s proactive approach in accelerating renewable energy adoption. With the extended incentives and increased quotas, Malaysia is set to make significant strides in its journey toward a greener, more sustainable future.
