In a significant development for Penang International Airport’s expansion project, the Penang government has successfully addressed the relocation concerns of over 50 Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) employees. The affected staff, who resided in quarters within the expansion project’s vicinity, have been offered affordable housing solutions in Teluk Kumbar, as announced by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow clarified the state government’s supportive role in this matter, emphasizing that the project’s execution falls under MAHB’s jurisdiction. However, the state has played a crucial part in assisting with the relocation of the staff quarters affected by the project’s upcoming phase. He assured that the issue has been comprehensively resolved, with all involved staff being accommodated in more than 50 units of affordable homes.

The announcement coincides with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to Penang, where he committed to accelerating the airport expansion. Anwar highlighted the urgency of addressing congestion issues at the airport, given Penang’s growing popularity as a tourist destination. He has promised to discuss the project further in an upcoming Cabinet meeting.

The state government has expressed its enthusiasm for the federal government’s initiative to fast-track the expansion. Chow pointed out the critical need for timely project completion to keep pace with the recovery and growth of the tourism sector. He noted the increase in flights to Penang as a positive sign but also as a factor that underscores the urgency of expanding and enhancing airport facilities to support further growth.

The Penang International Airport expansion is poised to significantly impact the state’s tourism landscape, ensuring it can accommodate an increasing number of visitors. The successful relocation of MAHB staff marks a key milestone in the project’s progress, demonstrating effective collaboration between state and federal governments to facilitate essential infrastructure developments.
