The Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang is set to commence by the end of the year, following final contract negotiations between Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and SRS Konsortium. The project, a major component of Penang’s infrastructure development plan, is expected to connect critical areas of the island, including Silicon Island and Komtar.
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee Chairman Zairil Khir Johari recently shared that MRT Corp and SRS Konsortium are in the final stages of negotiations, with work anticipated to start simultaneously across multiple locations once all contractual details are solidified.
“Once ground-breaking begins, work will start in various locations where there are no obstacles, such as government land or areas without squatters,” Zairil explained.
Strategic Ground-Breaking Locations and Phased Construction
Several locations have been identified for the ground-breaking ceremony, considering logistics and traffic management. Construction will commence at optimal sites with clear access to ensure a smooth start.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted that the Ministry of Transport would announce the project’s official launch date, following the formal agreement between MRT Corp and SRS Konsortium.
Mutiara Line’s Key Project Segments
The Mutiara Line LRT project is part of a broader federal initiative, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Budget 2025, and is segmented into three core components:
- Civil Construction for Segment I: Silicon Island to Komtar.
- Civil Construction for Segment 2: Komtar to Penang Sentral.
- Turnkey System and Carriage Works Contract: Implemented on a build-maintain-transfer basis.
The project forms part of Penang’s comprehensive development plan, alongside the Juru and Sungai Dua Elevated Highway projects, the expansion of Penang International Airport, and Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3.
This LRT development aims to address Penang’s growing transit needs and is poised to become a significant milestone in the state’s journey toward enhanced connectivity and urban growth.
