Shah Alam Spearheads Pilot Project for EV Charger Guidelines in Selangor

EVcharging

In an innovative move towards sustainable urban development, the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has embarked on a pivotal pilot project to craft detailed guidelines for the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers within Selangor’s jurisdiction. This initiative aligns with the federal government’s guidelines issued in September 2023, marking a significant step forward in promoting eco-friendly transportation options across the state.

Selangor’s Public Health and Environment Committee Chairman, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, outlined the project’s objectives, emphasizing its focus on feedback from local authorities (PBTs) and areas governed by the Selangor administration. This approach aims to tailor the guidelines to the state’s unique requirements before rolling out any related incentives.

The discussion arose from a query by Dr. Afif Bahardin of Perikatan Nasional-Taman Medan, who inquired about the Selangor government’s plans to mandate EV charging points in new housing developments. In response, Jamaliah highlighted the ongoing efforts to expand the EV infrastructure, noting the construction of 681 EV charging stations in Selangor to date, through collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector.

With a goal to establish 1,000 EV charging bays by 2025, the Selangor government is not only promoting the use of EVs but also considering incentives to encourage their adoption. This includes extending the existing free parking scheme for hybrid and EV users, initially implemented by the Petaling Jaya City Council in 2011, to all EV users across the state.

This pioneering pilot project by MBSA is a testament to Selangor’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its role as a leader in integrating green technology into urban planning. By fostering the adoption of electric vehicles, Selangor aims to reduce carbon emissions, enhance air quality, and pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future for its residents.
