Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc, has announced a significant investment of US$6.2 billion (RM29.2 billion) in Malaysia through 2038. This long-term commitment includes the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region, which will provide Malaysian developers, start-ups, entrepreneurs, and enterprises with enhanced capabilities for running applications and serving end users from local AWS data centres.

This investment is expected to contribute approximately US$12.1 billion (RM57.3 billion) to Malaysiaโ€™s gross domestic product (GDP) and support over 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs annually through 2038.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “The launch of an AWS infrastructure region in Malaysia provides access to new and emerging technology for Malaysian entities and businesses of all sizes, boosting our countryโ€™s capabilities for digital innovation. This milestone is a significant step towards fulfilling the vision of Malaysiaโ€™s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 to build a highly skilled, innovative, prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable economy.”

Malaysiaโ€™s rapidly growing digital economy requires access to secure, resilient, and sustainable cloud infrastructure. With todayโ€™s launch, AWS is proud to support Malaysiaโ€™s digital transformation and help accelerate its role as a regional hub for AI.”

The AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region will enhance Malaysiaโ€™s digital infrastructure, offering low latency, high availability, and robust business continuity. This expansion adds to AWS’s global footprint, which now includes 108 Availability Zones across 34 geographic regions, with plans for further growth in Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

This initiative underscores AWS’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s digital transformation and its growing role as a leader in the Southeast Asian digital economy.
