BYD Seal Leads EV Sales in Malaysia for January-August 2024, Dominating Over Tesla Models

The BYD Seal continues to reign as the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia for the period of January to August 2024, according to the latest JPJ registration data. With a total of 2,267 units registered, the Seal outpaced the BYD Atto 3 and Tesla Model 3, which secured second and third spots with 2,217 and 1,978 units, respectively.

Trailing close behind in fourth place is the Tesla Model Y, which saw 1,851 units registered. Meanwhile, the BYD Dolphin rounds off the top five, recording 1,119 units sold. Together, BYD and Tesla dominate Malaysia’s EV market, contributing to a combined total of 5,603 units from BYD and 3,829 units from Tesla.

August 2024 EV Sales: Tesla Model 3 Leads

In the month of August 2024, the Tesla Model 3 emerged as the best-selling EV with 379 units sold, surpassing the BYD Atto 3 (227 units), BYD Seal (205 units), and BYD Dolphin (101 units). Notably, the Tesla Model Y only saw 57 units sold in August, likely due to anticipation for the upcoming Juniper facelift.

Other noteworthy performers in August include the MINI Countryman SE, which recorded 87 units following its May launch, and the MG4 EV, which moved 62 units during the month.

Full Year-to-Date Breakdown: January-August 2024

Looking at the January-August tally, Chery’s Omoda E5 secured sixth place with 471 units sold, while Great Wall Motor’s Ora Good Cat and 07 models combined with smart’s #1 and #3 to take eighth place in the rankings.

The BMW brand performed well in the premium EV segment, featuring five models in the top 20 list:

  • BMW i5 (293 units)
  • BMW iX2 (253 units)
  • BMW i4 (186 units)
  • BMW i7 (177 units)
  • BMW iX (169 units)

As Malaysia’s EV market continues to expand, BYD and Tesla remain the top contenders, with BYD leading the charge in total units sold so far this year.
