Proton Launches its First Electric Vehicle, the eMas 7, in Collaboration with Geely
Proton, Malaysia’s premier automotive manufacturer, has unveiled its highly anticipated first electric vehicle (EV), the eMas 7. Managed under Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net), the eMas 7 will be sold under the new eMas brand. This launch marks a significant milestone for Proton as it ventures into the electric vehicle market, aiming to offer a locally developed EV that meets global standards.
A Collaborative Development with Geely
Contrary to initial speculations of a simple rebadge, the eMas 7 was co-developed with Geely, involving extensive collaboration between both companies. Proton revealed that 230 of its engineers and designers were part of the development process, contributing a staggering 700,000 man-hours and over 10 million kilometers of vehicle testing. This rigorous testing regime ensures the eMas 7 meets both Proton’s and Geely’s high standards for durability and performance.
Advanced Platform and Technology
The eMas 7 is built on the Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA), a versatile platform developed by Geely. This platform supports various powertrain configurations, including fully electric, hybrid, and even methanol applications. For the eMas 7, the GEA platform incorporates cell-to-body technology, where the battery is integrated into the car’s body structure, enhancing torsional rigidity up to 31,000 Nm per degree.
While Proton refers to this platform as the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) for branding purposes, it shares the same advanced features. The eMas 7 is set to be the first model utilizing the GMA platform, positioning it as a pioneer in Proton’s EV lineup.
Performance and Range
The eMas 7 is expected to offer impressive performance with its front-mounted electric motor delivering 218 PS (215 hp) and 320 Nm of torque. This setup enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 180 km/h.
The EV will come with two battery options, both using Geely’s Aegis “short blade” cells. The 49.52-kWh battery provides a range of up to 440 km, while the 60.22-kWh battery extends this to 530 km based on the CLTC standard. However, real-world range is expected to be approximately 350 km and 420 km, respectively. Fast charging capabilities allow the battery to be charged from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes using DC fast chargers.
Design and Features
While the eMas 7 remains camouflaged, it retains many design elements from the Geely Galaxy E5, including sleek headlamps, flush pop-out door handles, and full-width taillights. The eMas 7 features a distinctive new eMas logo and Proton script beneath the taillights, differentiating it from its Geely counterpart.
Inside, the eMas 7 is likely to mirror the E5’s luxurious cabin, which includes a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and a large 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Flyme Auto. Additional features may include a 50W wireless charging pad, 256-color ambient lighting, powered front seats, and advanced driver assistance systems.
Positioning in the Market
The eMas 7 enters a competitive Malaysian EV market, facing rivals like the BYD Atto 3, smart #1, GAC Aion Y, BMW iX1, and Chery Omoda E5. With dimensions slightly larger than the Honda CR-V and other compact SUVs, the eMas 7 offers a spacious and comfortable interior. Its pricing in China ranges between RM77,000 and RM99,000, but as a fully imported unit, it must adhere to Malaysia’s minimum price cap for CBU EVs, meaning it will likely be priced above RM100,000 until local assembly begins.
Availability and Sales
The Proton eMas 7 is scheduled to hit the Malaysian market by the end of 2024. Initial sales will be conducted through 29 Proton dealerships nationwide, which will share space with the eMas brand. This rollout aligns with the government’s target of introducing at least one EV by 2025.
Conclusion
Proton’s entry into the electric vehicle market with the eMas 7 signifies a bold step towards sustainable and innovative automotive solutions. With its advanced technology, robust performance, and competitive positioning, the eMas 7 is poised to attract both new and loyal Proton customers. As Malaysia continues to embrace electric mobility, the eMas 7 represents a promising addition to the country’s automotive landscape. Are you excited about Proton’s first EV?
