Monash University to Build RM2.8 Billion Campus in TRX Kuala Lumpur
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — In a landmark move that cements Malaysia’s position as a regional education and innovation hub, Monash University Malaysia has announced plans to build a new RM2.8 billion (A$1 billion) campus in the heart of Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), Kuala Lumpur’s international financial district.
The future Monash Malaysia Campus, developed in partnership with TRX City Sdn Bhd, will be one of the largest foreign university investments in Malaysia’s history.
Set for completion by 2032, the new city campus will support 22,500 students and 1,700 staff, delivering world-class education and research facilities in areas critical to ASEAN’s future — including energy transition, artificial intelligence (AI), health sciences, climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing.

The announcement was made by Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering, alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Professor Pickering described the project as “Monash’s largest-ever investment in world-class education and research in Malaysia — and a cornerstone of our Indo-Pacific strategy.”
“We will deliver world-class education at scale, with an ASEAN futures focus on digital transformation, sustainability, and green energy,” said Professor Dato’ Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed the project as a symbol of regional cooperation and trust.
“This is not only an investment in education but in shared futures,” he said. “Students will learn from one of Australia’s leading universities right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.”
2. TRX: The Beating Heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Future
The upcoming Monash Malaysia Campus will be located within Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) — Malaysia’s premier international financial centre, already home to Exchange 106, TRX Residences, and major multinational headquarters.
Dato’ Sr Azmar Talib, CEO of TRX City, said the partnership demonstrates TRX’s role as a powerful economic catalyst.

The future Monash Malaysia Campus will complement the existing campus in Bandar Sunway, not replace it. Together, they will serve as twin pillars of Monash’s Malaysian presence — one suburban, one urban — each focused on distinct strengths.

The project is expected to contribute RM19.1 billion (A$6.5 billion) to Malaysia’s economy over the next decade through infrastructure development, workforce creation, and innovation-related spillovers.

The new TRX campus deepens the Malaysia–Australia partnership, especially in higher education and knowledge exchange.
Monash University, which ranks among the world’s top 50 universities, has been present in Malaysia since 1998, when it became the first foreign university to establish a campus here.
Since then, over 11,000 students from 80 countries have graduated from Monash University Malaysia — with growing demand from across ASEAN.
