Monash University to Build RM2.8 Billion Campus in TRX Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — In a landmark move that cements Malaysia’s position as a regional education and innovation hub, Monash University Malaysia has announced plans to build a new RM2.8 billion (A$1 billion) campus in the heart of Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), Kuala Lumpur’s international financial district.

The future Monash Malaysia Campus, developed in partnership with TRX City Sdn Bhd, will be one of the largest foreign university investments in Malaysia’s history.

Set for completion by 2032, the new city campus will support 22,500 students and 1,700 staff, delivering world-class education and research facilities in areas critical to ASEAN’s future — including energy transition, artificial intelligence (AI), health sciences, climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing.

1. A Vision for the Indo-Pacific

The announcement was made by Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering, alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

Professor Pickering described the project as “Monash’s largest-ever investment in world-class education and research in Malaysia — and a cornerstone of our Indo-Pacific strategy.”

“We will deliver world-class education at scale, with an ASEAN futures focus on digital transformation, sustainability, and green energy,” said Professor Dato’ Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed the project as a symbol of regional cooperation and trust.

“This is not only an investment in education but in shared futures,” he said. “Students will learn from one of Australia’s leading universities right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.”

2. TRX: The Beating Heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Future

The upcoming Monash Malaysia Campus will be located within Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) — Malaysia’s premier international financial centre, already home to Exchange 106, TRX Residences, and major multinational headquarters.

Dato’ Sr Azmar Talib, CEO of TRX City, said the partnership demonstrates TRX’s role as a powerful economic catalyst.

“Our collaboration with Monash University Malaysia strengthens Malaysia’s competitiveness and connectivity with ASEAN through talent development,” he said.
“Monash’s city campus will enrich TRX’s diverse community and nurture the next generation of global thinkers.”

With its world-class infrastructure, sustainability certifications, and direct MRT interchange connectivity, TRX continues to evolve beyond finance — emerging as a complete live–learn–work destination for global corporations, universities, and innovators.

3. Education, Research, and Innovation at Scale

The future Monash Malaysia Campus will complement the existing campus in Bandar Sunway, not replace it. Together, they will serve as twin pillars of Monash’s Malaysian presence — one suburban, one urban — each focused on distinct strengths.

The TRX campus will house cutting-edge research centres in:

  • Energy transition and sustainability

  • Artificial intelligence and data science

  • Health and digital healthcare

  • Semiconductor and advanced manufacturing

  • Cybersecurity and climate resilience

More than 35 new degree programs will be introduced, aligning with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the nation’s broader goals for talent development, digital economy expansion, and green transition.

The project is expected to contribute RM19.1 billion (A$6.5 billion) to Malaysia’s economy over the next decade through infrastructure development, workforce creation, and innovation-related spillovers.

4. Strengthening Malaysia–Australia Relations

The new TRX campus deepens the Malaysia–Australia partnership, especially in higher education and knowledge exchange.

Monash University, which ranks among the world’s top 50 universities, has been present in Malaysia since 1998, when it became the first foreign university to establish a campus here.

Since then, over 11,000 students from 80 countries have graduated from Monash University Malaysia — with growing demand from across ASEAN.

“Showcasing Australia’s best-in-class higher education overseas is a huge opportunity,” Albanese said. “It extends deep connections across our region — exactly what we’re seeing through Monash’s investment in Malaysia.”

Monash also operates in Indonesia, and works with partners in Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, connecting nearly 60,000 ASEAN alumni.

5. Kuala Lumpur’s Education–Property Synergy

The announcement signals a broader trend — Kuala Lumpur’s transformation into an education and innovation capital that complements its financial and business profile.

Global institutions like Monash are increasingly drawn to Malaysia’s strategic geography, affordability, and talent pool, while TRX offers a ready ecosystem of corporate headquarters, transport access, and smart infrastructure.

For investors, the long-term presence of a Tier-1 university within TRX is likely to:

  • Boost property values in and around the district.

  • Strengthen rental demand for residences catering to international students and staff.

  • Enhance Kuala Lumpur’s liveability as an urban knowledge hub.

In particular, developments like TRX Residences, The Exchange TRX, and nearby Bukit Bintang properties stand to benefit from increased global visibility and footfall.

6. Investing in Malaysia’s Future

Monash University Malaysia’s RM2.8 billion investment is not only an education milestone but a city-building initiative — integrating research, enterprise, and culture within Kuala Lumpur’s urban core.

“Our growth-driven investment will ensure we continue to deliver a world-class learning environment for students,” said Professor Adeeba.

As Malaysia pursues its vision of becoming an innovation-driven economy, the arrival of Monash’s new campus at TRX represents more than a partnership — it’s a statement of confidence in Malaysia’s future.
