The Works Ministry is building a rest and recreation (R&R) stop in the Jelukong area in Lubok Antu, as well as a lay-by in Sungai Semanok, Bintulu for the convenience of users of the Pan Borneo Highway between Sibu and Bintulu.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad said that in addition to providing basic facilities for road users to rest and pray, local entrepreneurs can also generate income by running eateries and pasar tamu (weekly markets) at the R&R.
“This R&R, when completed, will be maintained by the local authority because this is part of the highway does not have tolls,” he said during the question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (March 6).
He was replying to a question from Edwin Banta (GPS-Selangau) regarding the ministry’s plan to provide R&R facilities along the Pan Borneo Highway, especially between Sibu and Bintulu.
To a supplementary question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) regarding the construction of R&R along the Central Spine Road, Abdul Rahman said the ministry will also build R&Rs for the comfort of users.
He said they would be built in Bentong and Lipis in Pahang, as well as in Gua Musang, Kelantan.
