Sunway Bhd’s Strategic Path to Net Zero: A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
Sunway Bhd is intensifying its efforts to achieve net zero emissions, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development. As outlined in their 2023 Annual and Corporate Governance Report, the company is not only adhering to international standards but is also setting a benchmark in integrating sustainability into its core business strategies.
Tan Sri Chew Chee Kin, president of Sunway Bhd, highlighted the companyโs dedication to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This commitment ensures that sustainability principles are woven into the decision-making processes, business practices, and overall operations of the group, helping to maintain its position at the forefront of industry innovation.
Innovations and Partnerships Driving Change
Under the leadership of Chew, Sunway Bhd has developed a clear pathway for reducing embodied carbon emissions, particularly within its building materials and quarry divisions. This initiative comes in anticipation of the European Unionโs Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which will impose taxes on carbon-intensive products. Starting in 2023, the company has begun to quantify the carbon footprint of all its products, setting a precedent for transparency and accountability in its environmental commitments.
From 2025, Sunway plans to obtain Environmental Product Declarations for these products, which will further illustrate the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainability in its supply chain.
Expanding Malaysiaโs EV Infrastructure
In alignment with the Malaysian governmentโs Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint, Sunway has partnered with Gentari Sdn Bhd and EV Connection Sdn Bhd to expand the network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the nation. This ambitious project aims to install 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025, supporting the blueprintโs goal for EVs and hybrids to make up at least 15% of total industry volume by 2030. This move is a critical step towards reducing the carbon footprint of Malaysiaโs transportation sector and promoting the adoption of cleaner, more sustainable technologies.
A Model for Corporate Citizenship
Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Fook Ling, founder and chairman of Sunway Bhd, reaffirmed the group’s resolve to pursue more than just financial success. By striving to be a model corporate citizen, Sunway Bhd is setting standards in sustainable business practices and showing that financial performance can go hand in hand with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
The Road Ahead
As Sunway Bhd continues to implement its decarbonisation strategy, the company remains a pivotal force in promoting sustainable development within Malaysia and beyond. The integration of environmental goals with business operations not only enhances Sunwayโs competitiveness but also contributes significantly to the global efforts against climate change. Moving forward, Sunway’s dedication to transparency and innovation will likely inspire other companies to follow in its footsteps, thereby amplifying the impact of corporate contributions to the sustainable development agenda.
In an era where climate action is more critical than ever, Sunway Bhdโs proactive approach serves as a beacon of responsible business practices, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
