The groundbreaking ceremony of Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3 (BKIP3) in Penang marked a significant milestone in the state’s industrial achievements, as highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The event underscored Penang’s historical success in spearheading industrial development through the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), which has notably influenced the nation’s economic structure.

Acknowledging the industrial boom’s impact on local infrastructure, the Prime Minister announced federal initiatives to expedite the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project and the expansion of the Penang International Airport. Anwar addressed the critical issue of water supply, particularly in industrial zones like BKIP, and revealed plans to develop a new hi-tech industrial area in Kerian. This development is expected to enhance water and energy supplies in South Seberang Perai (SPS) and across Penang, through a strategic water agreement between Perak and Penang.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow noted that BKIP3 represents the 10th industrial park developed by PDC, reflecting the state government’s commitment to meeting investor demand. Spanning 407 acres and to be developed in four phases, BKIP3 aims to accommodate both foreign and domestic investments. The first phase, covering over 60 acres, is slated for completion in 2025.

The establishment of BKIP3 is anticipated to generate significant economic benefits for Penang and the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. It promises to enhance connectivity through strategic infrastructure like the North-South Expressway, Penang International Airport, Penang Bridge, Penang Port, and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge.

This strategic initiative by the Penang state government, backed by federal support, sets a promising trajectory for industrial growth and infrastructure development, aiming to position Penang as a key player in the region’s economic landscape.
