Largest Mall Rooftop Solar PV System in Malaysia

In line with its sustainability objectives, IOI Properties unveiled Malaysia’s largest mall rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at IOI City Mall. Developed in partnership with TERA VA Sdn Bhd, the 4MWp solar PV system for the mall’s Phase 2 was commissioned in October 2024.

Key highlights of the solar PV system include:

  • Estimated annual electricity generation: 5,355 MWh.
  • Expected annual carbon emissions avoidance: 4,059.34 tCO2.

Together with the existing 3.5 MWp system installed in 2021 for Phase 1, the combined capacity now totals 7.569 MWp, generating 9,785 MWh annually and avoiding 7,661 tCO2 emissions per year.

Chris Chong, COO of property investment at IOI Properties, emphasized the importance of renewable energy adoption:
“As the largest mall in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, we recognize our responsibility beyond providing lifestyle experiences. This solar PV initiative is fully aligned with the strategies laid out in ISR 2030.”

Broader Renewable Energy Plans

The solar PV system is part of a broader renewable energy initiative extending to other IOI developments, including:

  • Palm Garden Golf Club.
  • IOI Mall Puchong.
  • Future projects at IOI Sales Galleria in Bandar Puteri Puchong, Bangi, and IOI Resort City.

These efforts support IOI Properties’ decarbonization goals and commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.

Panel Discussion: Building Sustainable Urban Environments

The event concluded with a panel discussion on “Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Developments”, moderated by Kristine Ng, IOI Properties’ head of group corporate sustainability. Panelists included:

  • Serina Hijjas, Malaysian Green Building Council president.
  • Henry Chan, senior director of conservation at WWF Malaysia.
