After a seven-month renovation, Dataran Lang in Langkawi, home to the famed Brahminy Kite statue, is now open to visitors. The revitalized site offers a more vibrant and attractive experience for tourists, including newly upgraded fountain systems, improved lighting, and enhanced public amenities.
According to Langkawi Development Authority CEO Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid, the project began in February and was completed on September 16. The eagle statue, a major attraction, has been freshly painted, while the fountain area, which had been under repairs, now features enhanced water displays.
“The project aimed to upgrade and maintain Dataran Lang’s existing features, preserving its historical and cultural significance while improving its overall functionality and aesthetics,” Haslina said. The electrical infrastructure was also upgraded, and new lighting has been installed to improve the visual appeal after sunset.
Spanning almost 8 hectares, Dataran Lang includes terraces, ponds, footbridges, and pavilions, and now offers enhanced amenities that make it ideal for festivals, cultural events, and other community gatherings. The statue, standing at 12 meters tall, has been a landmark since its completion in 1996, symbolizing Langkawi’s namesake derived from the Malay words “helang” (eagle) and “kawi” (reddish-brown stone).
This comprehensive refurbishment aims to maintain Dataran Lang’s charm while ensuring the longevity of its structures, positioning it as an even more attractive destination for visitors.
