MRT3 Construction Expected to Begin in 2027 Following Land Acquisition Process
The long-anticipated Mass Rapid Transit 3 (MRT3) project in Klang Valley is projected to begin on-site construction in 2027, according to Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim. Speaking at a press conference during the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards 2024 (MCIEA 2024), Mohd Zarif explained that the land acquisition process is currently underway and will extend into 2026.
“We hope that by 2027, the government will have enough capacity to move the project forward. That’s my personal target, but it depends on the economic situation,” he stated, noting the positive trajectory of Malaysia’s economy.
Land Acquisition Process and Timeline
Public inspections of the MRT3 alignment are ongoing until December 2, 2024, after which the alignment will be finalized. The land acquisition process, which plays a critical role in the project’s development, is expected to take up to 24 months, delaying physical construction until 2027.
Mohd Zarif highlighted the importance of economic stability in ensuring the project’s viability: “The economy is improving, so give it a few more years and I think it will be solid ground to start.”
Recognized Excellence at MCIEA 2024
At the MCIEA 2024 event, MRT Corp was awarded the Best Project Award in Infrastructure (Major Category) for its work on the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit: Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line (MRT2). This recognition underscores MRT Corp’s continued commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure projects.
MRT3: The Final Link in Klang Valley’s Transit Network
Dubbed the Circle Line, MRT3 will complete the Klang Valley MRT network, connecting various mass rapid and light rail transit (LRT) systems into an integrated transportation network for Malaysia’s capital region. The 51km rail line is designed to accommodate up to 25,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
A complete journey on the MRT3 line will take approximately 73 minutes, offering passengers a fast and efficient way to navigate Kuala Lumpur’s urban sprawl. By closing the loop in the Klang Valley transit network, MRT3 is set to enhance connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the region.
Conclusion
While construction of MRT3 is still a few years away, the project represents a major step forward in Malaysia’s urban transportation planning. Once completed, the Circle Line will provide seamless connections across Klang Valley’s transit systems, offering commuters a reliable and comprehensive transportation option.
