Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed optimism that construction on the island’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) line could start by the end of 2024. This comes as final negotiations between MRT Corp and SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd are nearing completion.
Chow noted that both parties are in the final stages of discussing technical details and contract values. Once these issues are resolved, the agreement will be signed, paving the way for construction to commence.
“We are eager to see work begin, but the Transport Ministry or MRT Corp will announce the actual groundbreaking date,” Chow said.
The LRT line is a major infrastructure project aimed at significantly improving Penang’s public transport system. The first section will span 30km and include 27 stations, connecting Bayan Lepas to Komtar.
Other Updates from Penang
Pulau Pinang Ferry Restoration
On the topic of the sinking Pulau Pinang ferry at Swettenham Pier, Chow called for its immediate salvage. The ferry, now out of service, was leased to a private company for conversion into a museum. However, water leakage has delayed repairs. Despite the setbacks, Chow assured that efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue.
Flood Preparedness in Penang
Chow also addressed concerns over potential flooding due to severe weather warnings issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department. The state’s disaster management unit is on high alert, with evacuation centres on standby.
Additionally, the Sungai Dua water treatment plant is being closely monitored, as floods in Kedah have caused increased water turbidity. Despite this, the plant remains fully operational, ensuring that water supply continues uninterrupted.
