The construction of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which will connect Johor Bahru and Singapore, has reached 83% completion as of July this year, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The project remains on schedule, with operations expected to commence on January 1, 2027.
Progress and Upcoming Milestones
Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the construction of the RTS Link is progressing smoothly, with significant milestones achieved. “The construction work on the RTS Link rail infrastructure has reached 83% physical completion, and we expect the RTS Link operator, RTS Operations Systems Sdn Bhd (RTSO), to have access for system installations by the end of this year,” Loke stated during a press conference.
Once the rail infrastructure is completed, RTSO will begin installing critical systems, including trackwork, rolling stock, signalling systems, and power supply and distribution. These installations are vital to ensuring the RTS Link is operational by the projected start date.
Development of the Bukit Chagar CIQ Complex
In parallel with the rail infrastructure, the construction of the Immigration, Customs, and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) at Bukit Chagar is also progressing according to schedule. Loke reported that the substructure of the CIQ building has been completed, and the construction of the superstructure is actively underway.
“The access for the agencies that will operate at the CIQ to install equipment and systems is expected to begin in August 2025,” Loke added.
Enhancing Infrastructure and Traffic Management
The Transport Minister also announced that the ministry is collaborating with local authorities to review and implement a traffic dispersal plan for the Iskandar Malaysia region. This plan is designed to enhance infrastructure development in Johor Bahru and improve overall traffic conditions in the city and its surrounding areas.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to manage the high influx of visitors and to support the economic growth of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Key elements of the plan include enhancements to land public transport, providing direct connectivity to the CIQ Complex in Bukit Chagar and the Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD).
Investments in Public Transport Infrastructure
To address current and future transport demands, the government is prioritising investments exceeding RM200 million in public transport infrastructure around Bukit Chagar. These investments aim to enhance connectivity and accommodate future developments in the region.
Among the developments is the construction of a new multi-story Park โN Ride facility at Bukit Chagar by MRT Corp. This facility will offer 1,500 parking spaces dedicated to RTS Link passengers. Additionally, Coronade Properties will provide an additional 781 parking bays at Coronation Square, located just 400 meters from Bukit Chagar Station, further supporting the cross-border service.
Conclusion
The RTS Link project is a critical infrastructure development that will significantly improve connectivity between Johor Bahru and Singapore. With 83% of the construction already completed and major milestones on the horizon, the project is well on track to meet its January 2027 operational deadline. These advancements will not only enhance cross-border travel but also contribute to the economic growth and development of the surrounding regions.
