Sarawak Energy to Power State’s First Energy-Efficient Tier Four Data Centre Park
Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) will provide power for Sarawak’s innovative Sarawak Data Centre Park (SDCP), an advanced tier four data centre hub aimed at supporting the state’s ambitious digital economy goals. This cutting-edge project, managed by Netrunner Sdn Bhd in collaboration with SEB’s subsidiary, Syarikat Sesco Bhd, is planned for completion by 2030 and integrates sustainable energy technologies, underscoring Sarawak’s commitment to green energy and responsible development.
Strategic MoUs Signed for SDCP
Netrunner has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SEB for electricity supply and a second MoU with AIZO Bhd (formerly Minetech Resources Bhd) for joint development. This collaboration, witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the 7th International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2024, emphasizes the importance of creating high-reliability, energy-efficient digital infrastructure in the state. With AIZO entering the data centre sector through this project, the region is set to meet the increasing demand for secure data solutions.
Advancing Digital Infrastructure and Job Creation in Sarawak
The SDCP will operate as a tier four data centre, providing the highest level of data processing reliability, which reinforces Sarawak’s position as a digital innovation hub for local and international clients. SEB’s group CEO, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, emphasized SEB’s commitment to a stable energy supply to power Sarawak’s digital infrastructure. The project will create new job opportunities, advance technological innovation, and prioritize eco-friendly practices, positioning Sarawak as a regional leader in sustainable digital infrastructure.
Sarawak’s Digital Transformation: STIS and SDRP
The Premier introduced two initiatives to drive Sarawak’s digital transformation further:
- Sarawak Technology and Innovation Sandbox (STIS): This innovation hub focuses on agritech, smart city solutions, and cultural economy initiatives, aiming to make Sarawak a key player in food security and tech advancement as part of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030.
- Sarawak Digital Residency Programme (SDRP): Targeting global digital talent, entrepreneurs, and investors, this program aims to attract remote professionals to Sarawak. Launching early next year, the De Rantau Sarawak initiative will further strengthen Malaysia’s appeal as a prime destination for digital nomads.
With these developments, Sarawak is setting the stage for a digitally inclusive economy, attracting foreign investment and fostering an advanced, knowledge-based society that values sustainable growth.
