The Penang state government has finalized the alignment for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project proposed by Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp). This decision marks a significant step forward in enhancing Penang’s public transportation infrastructure.

Alignment Selection

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the state has agreed to the alignment proposed by MRT Corp, which aligns closely with the state’s original intention, albeit with some modifications. The alignment starts from Silicon Island, connects Penang Sentral to the Macallum area in George Town, and extends to other key locations.

“We have chosen the alignment close to our original intention, but it is still a little bit different,” Chow said during a press conference at his office in Komtar. He noted that the original alignment did not include an extension to Penang Sentral in Butterworth.

Future Connectivity

MRT Corp’s proposed alignment has been selected for its potential to ensure future connectivity to other lines. This strategic decision supports the long-term vision for Penang’s public transportation network, providing seamless connections across the region.

Project Progress and Funding

Chief Minister Chow confirmed that all critical decisions for the project have been made, and the state is currently in the open tender stage. “We are now at the stage of open tender for the project,” he said, indicating that work will commence once the tender process is finalized.

In a significant development last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the federal government would fund the development of the LRT in Penang. The original alignment from Bayan Lepas to Komtar has been expanded to include routes to Tanjung Bungah, Air Itam, Butterworth, Kepala Batas, and Simpang Ampat.

Key Milestones

The Transport Ministry officially took over the Penang LRT project after the Cabinet approved its development on March 22. SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd has been appointed to build the first segment of the project, with construction expected to start in September.

Enhanced Public Transportation

The Penang Mutiara Line LRT project is set to revolutionize public transportation in the state, offering residents and visitors a modern, efficient, and reliable transit system. The new alignment will not only enhance connectivity within Penang but also improve access to key economic and residential areas, fostering regional growth and development.

Conclusion

The approval of the best alignment for the Penang Mutiara Line LRT project signifies a major milestone in the state’s efforts to modernize its public transportation infrastructure. With the support of the federal government and strategic planning by MRT Corp, the project is poised to deliver significant benefits in terms of connectivity, economic growth, and urban development.

As the project moves forward to the construction phase, the residents of Penang can look forward to a transformative change in their daily commute, making public transportation a more attractive and viable option for all.
