A significant change is on the horizon for those traveling to Genting Highlands, as toll charges will soon be imposed for vehicles heading up to the highland. A recent viral photo depicting the construction of a structure along the Batang Kali-Gohtong Jaya road raised speculation about the establishment of a toll plaza.
Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd, the company responsible for road management in the area, has confirmed that they will oversee the toll’s operations. Drivers will be charged when traveling uphill to Genting, but toll fees will not apply on the descent.
Although it has been confirmed that toll charges are forthcoming, specific details, such as the commencement date and the exact fee structure, have not yet been disclosed. The spokesperson emphasized that discussions are ongoing, and an official announcement will be made once the details are finalized.
Genting Malaysia Bhd constructed the roads in Genting Highlands in the mid-1960s and has been responsible for their maintenance ever since. Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd’s responsibilities include road maintenance, slope management, landslide prevention, tree removal, grass trimming, sewage system upkeep, streetlight maintenance, and more.
The toll charges will be determined based on the maintenance requirements of the roads and associated costs. Genting Highlands’ road management has been entrusted to Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd, in which Genting holds a 49.4% interest, according to its 2022 annual report.
The toll charges, commencement date, and potential discounts are still under discussion and will be announced after further deliberation. There are rumors that toll collection could begin in June next year, with charges ranging between RM2.50 to RM3.50.
